There’s a reason that upland game hunters from out of state come to Nevada for true adventure-it comes down to chukar hunting.

Northern Nevada boasts ideal terrain for the elusive chukar species, with high desert rock outcrops and rugged terrain that demands physical stamina of the hunter.

Can you meet the challenge of Nevada chukar hunting?

An unusually warm October started the season, with hunters reporting good success hunting high elevation water sources where the birds have concentrated so far.  As we head into a wetter weather pattern this week, be aware that the chukar will scatter to other water sources and possibly more forage.  Chukar can be anywhere now, and you’ll need to be prepared to walk the mountain slopes and additional terrain.

Experienced Nevada chukar hunters know that the birds run uphill, but fly downhill. Don’t waste time by chasing a chukar up a mountain just to have them blast down the other side of the mountain in flight. Be patient, and attempt to flush chukar from above, or at mid-point on the mountainside.

And most importantly, be prepared for the worst case scenario, and be well-outfitted from head to toe.  You will be hunting in extremely challenging Nevada terrain, so be sure to bring along an emergency survival kit with first aid supplies, extra rations, and water.
