Nevada Chukar HuntersAs we fully enter into the summer season, the time is drawing near for the annual Nevada upland game forecast.  Nevada chukar hunters have a key interest in the forecast, as the publication gives us a general status of the chukar population,  and determines the upcoming season’s hunting limits and season duration.

With field surveys typically conducted in mid-July to August of each year, upland game biologists seek to classify samples of Nevada chukar to determine the adult to young ratio, as well as average brood size of the species.  Chukar brooding season occurs typically from mid-June to October.  In addition to adequate vegetation sources for food and habitat cover, chukar brood success is highly dependent on available free water.  With Nevada’s typically arid, dry climate, chukar populations are particularly vulnerable to drought years.

To improve and increase chukar populations, artificial watering devices better known as “guzzlers” have been developed for use throughout Nevada.  Initially placed in random areas throughout the state in the mid-1950’s, the effectiveness of guzzlers was not closely studied until 1990.  Importantly, the study determined that random placement of  the guzzlers did not necessarily achieve success….but specifically, the proper timing and placement of guzzlers were necessary to increase brood potential.

According to Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), a total of approximately 1600 guzzlers are placed strategically throughout Nevada.  Of this number, 1256 are small volume guzzlers (325 gallon capacity), typically in use for chukar, sage grouse, and quail.  With the combined efforts of NDOW, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and numerous volunteers and conservation agencies, new guzzlers are built and existing guzzlers maintained.   Proceeds from Nevada’s required upland game bird stamp are used to fund the guzzler projects.

Interesting fact:  Winnemucca, Nevada is considered the “Chukar Capital of the Country”  http://www.winnemucca.nv.us/outdoor_recreation_hunting.html
