With the entire state undergoing a fourth straight year of drought conditions, is there a way for Nevada anglers to make the best of a bad situation?
The U.S. drought monitor for Nevada has been updated for April, and the picture continues to get worse as we head into another hot, dry Nevada summer.
Here are some tips for fishing Nevada’s waters in a drought situation-
Fish early summer: For mountain streams in Eastern and Central Nevada regions, fish early in the summer while stream waters are still fishable.
Fish when and where it’s cooler: Fish early morning and in the evening as temperatures are cooler, and be sure to fish deeper waters.
Fish with weed-less hooks: Warmer temperatures and dropping water levels inevitably lead to more weeds. For rod anglers, take stock now of your supply of weed-less hooks
Stay up to date on potential no-limit fishing for some Nevada waters:
Last season, Nevada’s Board of Wildlife Commissioners, at the request of Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), prompted a “no limit” period for game fish in Wildhorse and Willow Creek reservoirs. The low waters in these reservoirs lead to low oxygen levels, with an anticipated total fish die-off past summer. If a similar no-limit period is enacted again this season, Nevada anglers should take advantage of the opportunity.
