Confused about Nevada Shed Antler Laws?
Based on inquiries from many of our NOU members, we’ve investigated the history of the proposed regulation changes to clear up the confusion……
In March of 2014, the Nevada Board of Wildlife (NBOW) Commissioners voted unanimously to regulate antler shed hunting within the state, with intent to prohibit collecting of the antlers from January 1st through April 14th, The intent of the regulation was to discourage commercial antler hunting in Nevada for collector profit, as well as decrease pressure on wildlife in winter range habitat.
The Commission vote was then reviewed by the Nevada legislature in June 2014, and anticipated to possibly take effect in 2015.
So what happened?
After reviewing the NBOW Commission’s proposal, the regulation was deferred back to the Commission with a major question. The proposed regulations did NOT address whether Nevada private land owners had the right to collect shed antlers on their own land. How would this possibility be worded in the proposed regulation?
In November 2014, NBOW Commissioners conducted a workshop to discuss the question posed by the legislature. After much discussion among officials and the public, the Commission will re-visit the proposed language revision for shed antler hunting during their upcoming January board meeting.
To confirm the current status, NOU spoke with NDOW officials who stated that as of 2015, there are NO shed antler regulations prohibiting hunting or collecting of antler sheds in Nevada.
If the NBOW Commission votes to reword the proposal for another legislative review, the law would not take effect until at least January 2016.
